Wasabi health benefits
Wasabi is a delicious condiment to most people who like a little heat in their food, however most people don’t realize that there are also some health benefits associated with wasabi as well. The Japanese have always thought of longevity and health so it’s not surprising that one of their favorite condiments is good for you as well.
Wasabi is rich in what are known as isothiocyanates. I know that’s a big long word that doesn’t mean much , but what they are is the same chemicals that are found in cabbage and broccoli. The way they work is that they trigger enzymes in your body that are able destroy cancer causes substances. They can do this in such as to destroy cancer causing substances without doing any damage to other cells in your body.
While there is more research that needs to be done, signs are promising that wasabi might be able to be used as an anti-inflammatory in cases of arthritis and allergic reactions. It does this by restricting platelet application which is what causes inflammation. Platelets form clots in your blood and that’s what makes you swell up.
Wasabi has also been found to be anti-bacterial. Studies have been done that have shown that it can kill the bacteria that causes food poisoning. It has actually been so successful in this capacity that you can now find anti-bacterial hand washes in stores.
It is also thought that due to wasabi’s ability to stop platelet formation, it can go a long way toward reducing heart problems and strokes.
Something that you want to keep in mind though is that most of the wasabi that you get in restaurants is just horseradish and mustard. Real wasabi is expensive and very perishable so don’t think that you’re getting real wasabi every time that you order it in your favorite sushi bar.
